Indications:

  • Prevention and therapy of descensus genitalis (uterine and/or vaginal prolapse) and stress urinary incontinence.
  • Relief and stabilisation of the pelvic floor connective tissue and the pelvic floor muscles, especially after childbirth.

In Germany, restifem can be prescribed by a medical specialist on a prescription for medical aids or on a private prescription if there is an appropriate indication. The health insurance funds usually cover the costs (minus the statutory co-payment). Prescriptions can be redeemed e.g. at the pharmacy or directly at VIOMED.

Application:

The pessary is inserted into the vagina by the woman herself, ideally after getting up in the morning. It is worn during the day and removed and cleaned by the user at night.

For the treatment of the above complaints, restifem can be worn as long as these complaints improve.

In order to optimally support the regression of the pelvic floor connective tissue after childbirth, restifem should be worn for at least 3-6 months after the end of the menstrual flow. Breastfeeding causes a relative lack of oestrogen in the vaginal tissue, which delays the regression of connective tissue and muscles in the pelvis. Therefore, pessary use may be useful beyond the breastfeeding period.

Choosing the right size:

The pessary is available in sizes small (s) and medium (m). Small has the length: 7 cm and the largest width: 4 cm. Medium is 8 cm long and 4.5 cm wide. The height of both sizes is 2.1 cm.

The medium size fits most women best. If you are shorter (< 1.60 m) you can choose the smaller pessary. It may also be necessary to change from medium to small in the course of the regression of the tissue structures after childbirth.

In principle, you can test for yourself which pessary size is right for you. You should not feel any pain when wearing the pessary and there should be no contact bleeding. An initial feeling of pressure towards the uterus and behind the pubic bone is even desirable, as the tissue structures in these areas should be relieved, i.e. supported.

If you are not sure which is the right size, please consult your doctor.

In individual cases, it may be that neither size provides sufficient support and is pushed back out of the vagina, as the anatomical conditions vary greatly from person to person, or the pressure on the pessary may be too great in the case of a possible lowering of the bladder/uterus.
